Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Join Us in the Fight
October 29th, 2024As we observe Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, Upper Hutt Health Centre is joining the Breast Cancer Foundation of New Zealand to raise awareness, encourage early detection, and support the brave women and men affected by breast cancer. With 1 in 9 women diagnosed in their lifetime, we want to spread awareness about prevention, screening, and ways to support our community through the journey.
Early Detection Saves Lives
Breast cancer caught early has a significantly higher chance of being treated successfully. Regular mammograms and being aware of the signs and symptoms are vital tools. The Breast Cancer Foundation NZ offers free mammograms for eligible women over 45, providing an accessible way for many in our community to get checked. We encourage everyone over 45 to schedule regular mammograms and consult with your healthcare provider if you notice any changes in your breast tissue, such as lumps, thickening, or skin changes.
Knowing the Symptoms
While lumps in the breast are a common symptom, they’re not the only sign to look out for. Other potential indicators of breast cancer include changes in breast size or shape, dimpling, nipple discharge, or persistent pain in one area. We encourage patients to be proactive about their health and talk to their GP if they notice anything unusual.
Healthy Lifestyle and Prevention
A healthy lifestyle plays a role in reducing breast cancer risk. Regular exercise, a balanced diet, avoiding smoking, and limiting alcohol can support your health. These small changes can have a significant impact on your wellbeing and help lower the risk of various health conditions, including breast cancer.
Supporting Those Affected
Breast cancer doesn’t just affect the individual diagnosed – it impacts families, friends, and the whole community. There are many ways we can support our loved ones, whether it’s by being there for them emotionally, helping with day-to-day tasks, or joining the cause through fundraising or awareness activities. The Breast Cancer Foundation NZ offers many ways to get involved and support research and services for those in need.
