Get Ready for Flu Season
March 4th, 2025
As the weather starts to cool down, flu season is just around the corner. The good news is that flu vaccines will be available at Upper Hutt Health Centre from the first week of April. Getting your annual flu shot is one of the most effective ways to protect yourself, your whānau, and the community from the influenza virus.
Why Get the Flu Shot?
The flu isn’t just a bad cold—it’s a highly contagious virus that can cause serious illness, especially for young children, older adults, pregnant women, and people with certain medical conditions. In New Zealand, flu season typically peaks in winter, and thousands of people are hospitalised each year due to complications from the flu.
The flu vaccine:
- Reduces your risk: The flu vaccine helps protect against the most common strains of the virus each year. Even if you do catch the flu, symptoms are usually milder and complications are less likely.
- Protects those around you: When you get vaccinated, you also protect those who can’t get the flu shot themselves, such as newborns and people with certain health conditions.
- Helps prevent spread: Flu spreads quickly in workplaces, schools, and at home. Vaccination helps reduce the spread of the virus in the community.
Who Should Get the Flu Vaccine?
The Ministry of Health recommends that everyone aged 6 months and older get the flu vaccine each year. It’s especially important for:
- People aged 65 and over
- Pregnant women (the flu vaccine is safe during all stages of pregnancy)
- Young children with certain medical conditions
- People with chronic illnesses, such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease
- Healthcare workers and caregivers
Is the Flu Vaccine Free?
The flu vaccine is free for those most at risk of complications, including people aged 65 and over, pregnant women, and people with certain medical conditions. For others, a small fee may apply—contact us to find out more.
