Movember
November 6th, 2019Wondering why the tache is making a come back this month? It’s likely you’re seeing guys grow a Mo to support the Movember movement.
Movember is an initiative aimed to tackle prostate and testicular cancer, mental health awareness and suicide prevention in men.
Globally, every minute, a man dies by suicide. In New Zealand, 75% of suicides are men. This is serious stuff. Movember looks at mental health through a male lens, focusing on prevention, early intervention and health promotion, working towards a world where men take action to be mentally well, and are supported by those around them.
To speak with someone immediately, contact Lifeline on 0800 543 354, Samaritans on 135 247, or Suicide Crisis Helpline on 0508 828 865 (0508 TAUTOKO).
If life is in danger, call 111 or go directly to emergency services.
MEN’S HEALTH IS IN CRISIS
Men are dying on average 6 years earlier than women, and for largely preventable reasons. Unchecked, prostate cancer rates will double over the next 15 years. Testicular cancer rates have already doubled in the last 50. And across the world, one man dies by suicide every minute of every day, with males accounting for 75% of all suicides.
Movember is uniquely placed to address this crisis on a global scale. We fund groundbreaking projects all over the world, engaging men where they are to understand what works best and accelerate change.
